Server Manager Manifesto 2025/26
Server Manager? I hardly know ‘er!
About Me
- Currently 1st year CompSci
- Decidedly average at every game I play
- Been on the god-forsaken platform called Discord since 2017
- Been coding for 10 years (including having a job as a software dev.)
- Wasted a good 7 hours of my life adding markdown rendering and a post system to my website just to render this for me
Experience
-
Managing Online Communities
I personally run an online community with hundreds of members, where I manage the Discord server including creating a custom moderation bot to improve logging of user actions.
Via my role managing said community, I’ve now had influence over far larger servers with over 50 thousand members. -
Using numerous bots
Having been running servers since 2017, I have vast experiences with various Discord moderation bots such as Circle, YAGPDB, and Lilybot. -
And creating them too
I’ve created over 10 Discord bots before ranging from games such as Discord Plays Minesweeper to moderation bots
Aims for 2025/26
-
Audit the current role & permissions structure
To remove unnecessary permissions, meaning a lower risk of the servers being nuked. It’ll also ensure that no-one accidentally has permissions higher than they need to, making it vastly more difficult to abuse power within the servers. -
Implement a custom moderation bot
To improve logging of server management activities and to backup chats, meaning important information and clips won’t be lost.
It’ll also mean the addition of social media notifications, so you’ll know when someone in the community goes live and can go and support them. -
Reduce the use of the Esports Society account
To improve accountability for changes, so you always know who changed something.
It also means that if you don’t like a change, and enough people agree with you, it’ll be super easy to revert back to how it was before the change.
Why Me?
I’m running for this role as since its creation as sub-committee earlier this year, there’s been a lot of work done to improve the servers, but there’s plenty more to do. There’s so many tweaks and little quality-of-life bits to be done, which can improve everyone’s experience within the society, and I’d love to be the one doing so.
As a fresher this year I’m also in the perfect position to improve the initial experience within the community via the committee, so hopefully more members remain engaged with the community, and for longer.
I’m always online so I’ll always catch pings or DMs and be able to respond to anything that needs my attention quickly. I’m also around at most in-person events and so I’m always free to have a chat about anything, society-related or not.
